In this talk I will discuss the role of the national metrology institutes in providing an equivalent infrastructure to promote confidence in the effective use of data. I will talk about the drivers as seen from the UK government perspective and how NPL is trying to address the challenges in collaboration with other National Metrology Institutes, universities and stakeholders. I will report on the outcomes of various stakeholder engagement activities and how national and international projects are being set up to address the stakeholder requirements. I will also discuss the role of data science in improving the metrology landscape and the need to train the next generation of scientists with metrology and data science skills.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mini bio<\/p>\n<p>Since joining NPL in 1985, Alistair Forbes has carried out research in mathematical and statistical modelling, algorithm design, uncertainty evaluation, numerical software development and validation with applications to metrology in physical and environmental sciences. He is the NPL science area leader for Data Science and his current interests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mathematical and statistical modelling, Bayesian inference, uncertainty evaluation and decision making, sensor networks and data fusion, Gaussian processes,<\/li>\n<li>Measurement systems, process improvement, and quality engineering,<\/li>\n<li>Computational science: numerical analysis and scientific computing, scientific software validation, data provenance, curation and security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He has been Visiting Professor in Industrial Mathematics at the University of Huddersfield since 2000, is a Chartered Mathematician and member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and a Fellow in the Royal Statistical Society. He has published over 200 papers and reports and co-edited seven books on the application of mathematics to metrology. &nbsp;He is on the organising committee\/international programme committee for a range of international conferences, including: Advanced Mathematical and Computational Tools for Metrology, Laser Metrology and Machine Performance, International Conference of Metrology in Africa, and the IMEKO World Congress 2018. &nbsp;He received the Institute of Measurement and Control&rsquo;s Alex Hough-Grassby Award for the application of mathematics to measurement in 2014.<br \/>\n<!--:--><\/p>\n<p><!--:fr--><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3463\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cafmet2018.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Alistair-Forbes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"146\">Groupe Data Science, National Physical Laboratory, Royaume-Uni, <a href=\"mailto:alistair.forbes@npl.co.uk\"><em>alistair.forbes@npl.co.uk<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0L&rsquo;infrastructure internationale de mesure favorise la confiance dans la mesure, am\u00e9liore l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 du march\u00e9 et permet d&rsquo;assurer la qualit\u00e9 des produits.&nbsp;Dans cette conf\u00e9rence, je vais vous parler du r\u00f4le des instituts nationaux de m\u00e9trologie dans la promotion de la confiance quant \u00e0 l&rsquo;utilisation efficace des donn\u00e9es.&nbsp;Je vais parler des pilotes concern\u00e9s comme on le voit du point de vue du gouvernement britannique et comment NPL tente de relever les d\u00e9fis en collaboration avec d&rsquo;autres instituts nationaux de m\u00e9trologie, les universit\u00e9s et les parties prenantes.&nbsp;Je ferais un rapport sur les r\u00e9sultats des diff\u00e9rentes activit\u00e9s d&rsquo;engagement des parties prenantes et sur la fa\u00e7on dont les projets nationaux et internationaux sont mis en place pour r\u00e9pondre aux besoins des parties prenantes.&nbsp;J\u2019aborderais \u00e9galement le r\u00f4le de la science des donn\u00e9es dans l\u2019am\u00e9lioration du paysage de la m\u00e9trologie et la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de former la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de scientifiques dans le domaine de la m\u00e9trologie et des donn\u00e9es. \u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mini biographie<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"fr\">Depuis son arriv\u00e9e au NPL en 1985, Alistair Forbes a entreprit des recherches en math\u00e9matiques et en mod\u00e9lisation, la conception d&rsquo;algorithme, l&rsquo;\u00e9valuation de l\u2019incertitude, le d\u00e9veloppement de logiciels num\u00e9riques et de validation avec les applications en sciences physiques et&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"fr\">sciences de l\u2019environnement.&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"fr\">Il est le chef de la structure \u00ab\u00a0NPL Science\u00a0\u00bb pour la Science des donn\u00e9es et ses int\u00e9r\u00eats actuels incluant les \u00e9l\u00e9ments suivants :<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"fr\">Mod\u00e9lisation math\u00e9matique et statistique, inf\u00e9rence Bayesienne, \u00e9valuation de l\u2019incertitude et prise de d\u00e9cision, r\u00e9seaux de capteurs et fusion de donn\u00e9es, processus gaussiens ;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"fr\">Syst\u00e8me de mesure et ing\u00e9nierie de la qualit\u00e9, l\u2019am\u00e9lioration des processus ;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"fr\">Analyse num\u00e9rique et calcul scientifique, validation de logiciels scientifiques, provenance des donn\u00e9es, la conservation et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"fr\">Il est professeur en math\u00e9matiques industrielles \u00e0 l&rsquo;University of Huddersfield depuis 2000.
